What are the various types of brochures?

Brochures comes in various types of what is called a brochure fold. The different types of brochure folds include:

- Bi-Fold Brochures: a brochure fold of two panels that are hinged together leaving it to open by folding the panels against each other; a sheet of paper or cardboard folded in half along a crease down the center. Bi-Folds area also called half folds.

- Tri-Fold Brochures: a brochure fold of three panels that are created by folding the sides over the middle. After folding, the outcome will be three equal sections. Most often used, the right side is bent over first followed by the left side. This will allow the left side to open, so the brochure reads normally—from left to right.

- Gate Fold Brochures: a brochure fold that creates an interior panel. The fold consists of the outer corners of the paper coming to the center resulting in a large center, two-sided panel that opens like doors.

- Z- Fold Brochures: a brochure fold that has six panels of equal size—three panels on one side and three on the other side. To get this, use two parallel folds—two folds in opposite directions forming a shape similar to the letter Z.

- Accordion Fold: a brochure fold that uses a zig zag fold method—alternating folds that result in multiple panels of equal or similar size. If you’ve ever seen an actual “accordion”, this is the brochure fold version of that!

- Double Parallel Fold: a brochure fold that consist of folding a paper in half then folding it in half again. The result ends up being four double-sided panels—eight equal sizes.

  • French Fold: a brochure fold, also known as a four fold or right angle fold, that consist of folding a sheet one way then the other—vertically then horizontally. The final size will look like the brochure is the size of a post card.

How do you fold a brochure?

Folding a brochure depends on the type of brochure that was selected. Below, you will find the description on how to fold the following brochures (using 8.5 x 11 paper for most):

- Bi-Fold or Half Fold- putting the paper in landscape layout, fold the paper in half.

- Tri-Fold- placing the paper in landscape layout in front of you. Take both ends of one side of the paper and fold inward and stop in the center of the paper. Take the other side of the paper and fold it inward so that it is on top of the first fold that you made. Each panel should be 1/3 in length of the brochure.

- Gate Fold- using an oversized sheet of paper, place the paper in landscape layout in front of you. Taking both ends of one side of the paper, fold inward and stop in the center of the paper. Take the other end of the paper and fold inward stopping in the center of the paper as well. The outcome should reflect the brochure having “gates” (the two panels) that open and close the brochure.

- Z-Fold- take a sheet of paper and stage it in landscape layout. Take both ends of one side of the paper and fold inward stopping in the center of the paper. Flip it over then take both ends of the unfolded side and fold inward until you reach the end of the paper. The outcome will resemble the letter “Z”. There should be a total of six panels upon completion of folding.

- Accordion Fold- using an oversized sheet of paper, stage the paper in landscape layout. Take both ends of one side of the paper and fold inward stopping at the center. Take the ends of the other side of the paper and fold inward stopping in the center/meeting the end of the first folded half. Flip the paper over keeping it staged in landscape layout. Fold the paper in half. The result of all folds will resemble the letter “W” or what is known as an accordion. Usually, four to five panels come of this.
