You must be asking yourself, where to begin on how to create a professional looking flyer/postcard? To get there you have to take it back to the beginning and be reminded what Postcards are and what its intended purpose is all about. We will touch on what a postcard  is within the realm of graphic design. Lets go over what a postcard is, what type of marketing does it fall under, what its purpose is, size specs, and suggested programs to use, where to get it printed (of course you would print it here at Pro Print Press) and so much more.

So what is a Postcard?
A Postcard in the Graphic Design world is a type of handout that is used to when advertising products or events. We see them all the time when they are mailed to us. They can be seen hung up on bulletin boards, included in magazines or even have some laying on our car windows. Flyers like postcards, posters, brochures and many others are all used for promotional purposes to bring exposure for when something new is on the rise. In most cases these postcards are primarily in a print format but can also extend toward the internet as well by way of sending them through email.

What type of marketing do Postcards fall under?
In the marketing world there are 3 main types of Postcards that are used. The first is for ad promotion on a limited time offer on items that are on sale or about to go on sale. These types of postcards highly focus on information rather than emphasizing design quality. All information that’s presented is done so in a clear and concise manner with fonts that’s very legible. When providing information on this Postcard you should include the product details, pricing and contact information. Having an image that coincides with this information is a must.

The 2nd type of flyers or postcard falls under the banner of corporate used for promoting brand awareness with a nice sleek look. Designs of these flyers and postcards tend to favor neutral tone colors. Graphic designers tend to provide the elements to a page by using a balanced grid system. For example, you may ask yourself, what type of design would look good for corporate purposes? If the design tends to be flat, be sure to include elements such as the logo of the company, all contact info, photos and your specialty products or services.

Photo-centric postcards are the 3rd type of postcard that we are accustomed to seeing. These are best for network-building in addition to promoting events. The best example of these would be the type of postcards and flyers that promote night clubs. They have color schemes that focus on creating an atmosphere that’s bright and inviting. In a way, it’s sets up the idea in your mind to know what to expect when you decide to stop at such a venue.

What are the usual specs for a Postcard?
To answer this it really does depends on how much info is being included for the flyer. In regards to the postcard layout the most common size of a postcard range can’t be any larger than 6 inches by 11.5 with a thickness of .25 inches. Now if you’re taking the rules of USPS into account then its best to stick with a rectangle. The minimum sizing for this ranges around 5 inches long by 3.5 inches high with a thickness of .007 inches. An alternate size option would be 4.25 long by 6 inches with a thickness of .016. If you plan on doing any flyers bigger than postcards the standard for that is 8.5 by 11 inches. In the case of US sizes this is acceptable whereas the rest of the world would rely on an 8.3 by 11.7 inches (or A4). There is a halfway option as well and that the half page flyers. This type of flyer measures at 5.5 by 8.5 inches for printing.

What software do you need to create a flyer?
There are quite a few options out there when it comes to creating a flyer. These options range from those that you have to buy down to the ones you can access for free. When it comes to software the ones that are usually on top of everyone’s radar is from the Adobe Suite. The big 3 that fall under this are Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Speaking from experience if you want full creative control over your designs these are the ones to go to. In the past these were available in hard copy format but now can be accessed through the Adobe Cloud if you’re ok with the subscription model. Another option most would be familiar with is QuarkXPress. This software is really user friendly and it allows for the individual to manage documents rather easily. Some honorable mentions are Canva, Microsoft Word, Poster Maker and GIMP. All of these options listed are good choices it all comes down to personal preference in the end to determine what works best for you. Some of these options above also do have free trials for you to sample in order to solidify your decision.

What kind of elements is needed for writing a good flyer?
In order to this you would have to keep these following things in mind in order to be successful. First, be sure to make your content as brief as possible. If you every heard the phrase “Less is more” or “Keep it simply simple” this highly applies here. The last thing you would want is to have a graphic piece that’s too cluttered with information. It would run the risk of not keeping the viewers’ attention. We live in a time when attention spans are really short as we are constantly on the go when getting info quick fast and in a hurry. Next, it’s a good idea to divide your flyer design into small sections that are easily digestible. As mentioned above our attention spans are short and we often are looking for something that’s direct and to the point. In addition to this employing the use of infographics with bullet points is a good way to provide information about what the flyer is about. The use of certain color combinations will also aid in the overall presentation of your flyer. None of the above would be possible if you don’t have a catchy headline. Catchy

headlines are what could make or break the flyer or anything that you read in general. You’ll know if it’s catchy if you see something that’s obnoxiously big and bold. I mean… it’s really hard to miss and at the very least it should arrest your attention.

There are other elements to consider when writing a good flyer. Be sure to add some kind of call to action. One of the most common ways of doing this is to add a coupon offer. This will give the viewer and incentive to want to enquire about your business. Let’s be real, if you got a coupon to your favorite restaurant you know you’re going to use it before it expires, right? In addition to the call to action piece, also be sure to add directions to where the business is along with contact information. If you’re a traveling business (i.e. a freelancer) you may want to state that you’re serving such and such areas. It’s usually a good idea to not include your own personal info (unless you want to) for these things for safety reasons. Last but not least for what makes for a good flyer, always, always proofread everything. There’s nothing more annoying than to catch that one error or two before going to print after you printed the job. Trust me I can attest to this, it will save you additional time and money.

Where are good places to distribute flyers?
The short answer would be anywhere. When you’re out and about be sure to make note of where you are likely to see flyers. As mentioned earlier one of the good places would be a bulletin boards. If you plan on posting them in places like schools it’s usually a good idea to ask for permission to do so. Libraries are a good place to do this as well but some may have rules about putting them up. The most notable one would be if the thing that you’re advertising is for a nonprofit cause. You can place some flyers up at bus stops so that any one waiting will be able to notice it. Another idea is to leave them at checkout counters at stores or leave them with the receptionists. In the past I’ve gone to some

stores and left some flyers (in postcard format) at some counters as a good way to get some exposure. Laundromats are another good place to leave some flyers behind.

Handing out flyers is a good method for distribution also since you’re actively engaging with the target audience. Having said that, the where and when is what can make things tricky and could potentially cause unforeseeable problems for you which I’ll cover in a moment. Flyers are an extension of yourself and what you’re saying and as such it’s protected by the First Amendment law. Therefore the government can’t restrict what you’re saying based on what is said in your speech. Given the times that we’re living in now it seems some people are trying to make attempts to silence other people’s thoughts based on facts because they are too butt hurt to want to hear the truth. But anyway, that’s a topic for another discussion. What the government is allowed to do however, is dictate the time of day, place and in manner in which distribution of flyers is allowed.

In the case of time, you will be able to place them during certain times of the day. This is allowed as long as it’s not interfering with rush hour traffic or done too late into the evening. When it comes to place, there are some restrictions that follow this such as courthouses or mail boxes. Courthouses aren’t the most appropriate place to be posting things causally. There is a way around the mail box detail which will be introduced shortly. As for manner, this tends to be a questionable one because you have to try to say what you need to say without causing a scene (i.e. riots) or intentionally insulting people. Also it’s a good idea to avoid any use of profane and unnecessary language that may offend most people. Other details include the size of the flyer and how many can be posted in a single area at a time. In certain situations it’s good to have law enforcement on your side to reduce getting in trouble when passing out flyers. If at any point

you feel that your rights are being restricted it also helps to have a civil rights lawyer that’s experienced in your corner as well.

Placing flyers on cars is a good way to go also. Curbside parking as well as municipal parking lots are considered fair game. Public parking areas are also fair game just as long as you’re not holding up traffic or causing a potential hazard. If anyone tries to stop you from handing out flyers (including law enforcement) in a public right of way it would be illegal for them to do so. Go out and place them everywhere you can. Just be mindful that it’s a good idea to ask if you can place them out to avoid risking them being tossed aside.

If you do decide to go the route of placing them on cars, it’s a good idea to research laws about it as it will differ for city and state. These laws will change on yearly bases so it’s important to stay up to date. To find out more about these laws you can check with city hall to find out if what’s allowed and what’s not. It would be wise to have an example with you to show what it would look like. I would suggest doing this before you decide to go to print with your flyers. All the preparation and time put into them won’t mean a thing if you’re not able to distribute them. Check out your target markets and speak with the owner(s) of the lot and respectfully ask for permission.

Once you’ve gotten permission check out some of these places on where you distribute:

· Airports

· Apartment complexes

· Grocery stores

· Libraries

· Medical offices

· Restaurants, bistros, and pubs

· Salons and barber shops

· Shopping malls

· Strip malls

· Street and city parking lots

· Universities, schools, etc.

If you plan on leaving any flyers in mail boxes it must have a postage stamp! The reason behind this is simple; you can avoid major fines by doing so. Placing unstamped flyers in any mailbox is prohibited by law under Title 18, Section 1725 of the U.S. Code for crimes and criminal procedures. This states that if anyone intentionally deposits items in a “mail-able manner” without any postage in the letter box will be subject to a fine. The fine amounts vary depending on if it’s related to individual verses organization related occurrences. Individual occurrences can range as high as $5,000 per occurrence whereas an organization can range as high as $10,000 per occurrence. “Mailbox restriction” is the official law that this is known as.

In addition to mail boxes this law also highlights anything that is attached to, hung from, placed upon, supported by or placed into mail receptacles. Residential doors with mail slots on them are not part of the postal code policy since it’s a direct access point into the home itself. This also applies to non-lockable bins or apartment home mailboxes that use troughs.

When distributing flyers, there’s a certain strategy to it if you want to get the results you’re looking for. Be sure that you’re doing it in the most ethical way possible to avoid any potential backlash. Once you get your target audience down you’ll be able to effectively engage your viewers and leave an impact. Even the best designed flyers can fail if the marketing for them isn’t done right. Think of it the same way as when you are making cold calls to people and

hope to get results that way. More often than not, the people you’re calling may not show interest right away because of the type of day they could be having. Think of a flyer as a way to test the waters with people to see if they take the bait and contact you directly to want to know more about your business.
