Popular Uses & Ideas

Have you ever wondered what makes custom stickers and labels so significant in the world we live in today? We see them everywhere just about everywhere we go in some capacity. You see them on notebooks, computers, and walls. You even see custom stickers and labels posted alongside buildings, signs, and posters or maybe even wearing one in the form of a temporary name tags for professional purposes. Custom stickers and labels can be used in a variety of ways from professional needs down to a collectible hobby. Here in this article you’ll know what custom stickers are and how they pertain to professional and individual purposes. In addition, you’ll know the usual specs that custom stickers come in, its longevity, and how to remove and reapply these custom stickers and so much more.

So what are custom stickers and custom labels?
A sticker in general is a tool that is used for labeling things. Custom stickers are often printed on either vinyl or plastic materials. Other types of materials can work also as long as one side can maintain a pressure-sensitive adhesive on it. Custom stickers also have a practical use such as sealing up things like envelopes or boxes. Most of the time we are used to seeing custom stickers used as a form of decoration or marketing tool to promote political and business campaigns.

There are two main types of custom stickers that we are used to seeing on a daily bases. The 1st is the “Crack and Peel” sticker. This particular type of custom sticker features a slit on the back of it which makes it easier for the user to peel and apply it to any dry surface. Most of the time these stickers are meant for indoor usage but is often ignored in order to apply it elsewhere. As previously mentioned, custom stickers can be used as a form of decoration. You can see them posted on cars, lunch boxes, lockers, notebooks, walls windows. There’s seemingly no limit to where custom stickers can be applied for they do come in a variety of shapes and sizes since they are customizable. Custom stickers are also used to label things for identification purposes in order to convey an idea or word. These would fall under the branding sticker categories which are used by companies to label their products. In addition, custom stickers can describe the characteristics of a product which makes it easier for the viewer when the product is under examination. When it comes to branding of this nature it helps to have a label dispenser in order to apply the custom stickers quickly and efficiently.

The 2nd kind of custom sticker we are used to seeing is the Bumper type. These types of stickers are primarily intended for outdoor purposes. The materials are made using 4mil white vinyl with a permanent adhesive. Stickers like these are usually seen cars which showcases the support of a political cause (like the famous “I voted” phrase) or an ideological point of view (a symbol of religious practice). Other automobile stickers include the kind that shows when the car was last serviced and the kind that has vehicle registration information. The common term for these would be known as “window stickers”. It is mainly used for the interior of a car window (windshield area) instead of stickers that are water-resistant which are used outside of the car and can adhere to any surface.

Where can I get custom stickers and labels made?
There are a couple of ways to go about doing this. Custom stickers can be made at home as long as you have access to an inkjet printer. You would just have to make sure that you’re using inkjet sticker paper instead of trying to print them out on regular paper. The reasons for this are because they are not interchangeable so that may require changing settings on the printer itself. While at home you can use image-editing software to design how you want the sticker to look. After this is accomplished you may then print them on vinyl printing paper followed by laminating them to give them a more complete finish. If you’re planning on printing stickers out on your own at home just keep these details in mind. If you’re not in possession of these items one source I highly recommend checking out what we have to offer (www.proprintpress.com). We provide quick and easy solutions for all your printing needs with fast turnaround times. If you’re unsure about the design of the custom sticker we have a team at the ready that’s able to bring your ideas to life. Even if you already have designs to use we have a drop-down menu that will allow you to upload your designs and make the necessary adjustments as needed.

What are the printing specs for custom stickers?
Stickers come in a variety of sizes to suit the needs of the individual. In our drop-down menu you’ll see all the available sizes. There are so many that I won’t list them all here but encourage you to check them out for yourself. They range from as large as 8.5x11 down to 1.5x2.5 just to give you an idea of all possible in between sizes. For the order quantity, it starts from as low as 25 and range all the way up to 25,000. The paper that it comes in is either 70lb Sticker with split liner or on 4 Mil Matte Vinyl. It also provides a full-color front with no back and with no coating type. In addition to this, the product orientation comes in either horizontal or vertical in order to accommodate any rectangular shapes. Whether if you have a design or need one done they can also adjust the artwork.

How long can custom stickers last after they have been applied?
Custom stickers are made to last for many years for the viewer to enjoy. It really all depends on what the material that it’s made from and the type of surface that it’s placed on. The average lifespan of a custom sticker that is made from vinyl with adhesive can range up to 5 years. If the custom sticker is made from cling materials it could be as low as 6 months. In the case of custom bumper stickers, it depends on the ink thickness and vinyl stock durability. This is because they are completed without any type of lamination and as a result the life expectancy for these is between 3 to 5 years. Over time depending on the materials used, these stickers won’t fade due to moisture and weather conditions unless extreme heat factors are involved. When it comes to custom labels on cars, its best to not use normal paper ones because they as they could ruin the paint on them. The same can be said about any type of sticker if it’s not applied or removed correctly. As long as the adhesive is strong on the sticker it should hold up against weather conditions, aging in general or even car washes. Over time, custom bumper sticker designs have improved so that it becomes less damaging on the car exterior.

If you plan on making custom stickers, it’s best to be sure that they are laminated so that they can last longer over time. In addition this makes the stickers waterproof and help protect it from the UV rays of the sun. No need for worrying about the custom stickers shriveling or fading in colors. Since you now know that laminating stickers is a must, it’s encouraged to see how else custom stickers can be used outdoors. In everyday situations you’ll see how vehicles are using these custom stickers to promote ones business. You can be as creative as you want with them.

What is the main difference between custom stickers and decals?
The answer to this is that they are both custom stickers. However, with that said, that doesn’t mean that all custom stickers are necessarily decals. Decals primarily function as a decorative sticker that is mainly used for outdoor purposes. The way they are typically designed is that there in 3 layers. Think of it as a design sandwiched between 2 pieces of paper until it’s ready to be transferred onto a surface. Much like how a frozen hamburger patty is in between 2 sheets of paper until it is ready to be transferred to the cooking surface.

Can you remove a custom sticker without causing damage to it or surface?
In order to accomplish this, you would 1st need to give the custom sticker some heat by using a hot air dryer. This will help the adhesive loosen up before you make any peeling attempts. After that, you would need something thin and flat like a razor blade in order to work it in between the custom sticker and the surface it’s currently stuck to. You would need to start off with the corner(s) of the custom sticker for easier access so it will be easier to lift the sticker off. It would be ideal to be able to lift the sticker off by using the blade vs using your fingers to pull it off since there’s still a chance it ma rip. Note that if you do remove custom stickers of any kind from a surface there will be some residue leftover from the adhesive. As a result of removing the custom sticker from the surface, it does weaken that sticker’s integrity when applying it to a different surface.

In the case of removing custom bumper stickers from vehicles, it requires a different approach. As mentioned previously bumper stickers will last quite a while so removing them isn’t exactly an easy task. However it can be done in a non-time consuming manner. Using a razor to remove the bumper sticker wouldn’t be the most ideal in this situation because you run the high risk of damaging the car from the razor and removing the paint. A razor is fine if you’re trying to remove a decal from the car but not a custom bumper sticker. It’s also highly recommended not to use chemicals of any kind to remove any stickers like nail polish remover. Nail polish remover is good for when you’re trying to remove custom stickers from glass but never from the car itself because it will ruin the paint job. In the long run if you are planning on cleaning your car exterior with any products, its best to avoid using chemical-based ones that have any acetone in them or something similar.

The hairdryer example from earlier can also be applied here as well for car stickers. Like for any other surfaces, you don’t need to have the hairdryer directly on the custom sticker but a few inches from it to get the glue to loosen. A good substitution to the razor in this instance would be to use either a plastic scraper or an old credit card that you’re no longer using. Another method for removing the custom sticker would be to use a solution called Goo Gone. It also serves as a multipurpose removal for getting rid of any unwanted materials on the car (i.e. bird droppings, gum, tree sap, spray paint etc.). Using WD-40 is also another good substitution to use when removing stickers on cars. After the custom sticker is removed give the surface a good rinse with some soap and water.

If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly solution, chances are you wouldn’t have to go far to look as the answer may very well already be in your kitchen. White vinegar is another great option for removing stickers. Apply some on a paper towel or a paintbrush to douse the entirety of the sticker and wait for a few minutes. After that you can use either some duct tape to remove the sticker or a plastic putty knife. Using this method will get the job done and you won’t have to worry about damaging the paint of the car. This is also a cheaper alternative vs going out of your way to get WD-40 or Goo Gone. The most inexpensive way to remove a sticker would be to simply douse the sticker with some boiling water. Much like the previous examples you can use certain items to peel the sticker the same way.

If you want to avoid having to do much removal and cleaning to the bumper stickers here are a few ways to accomplish this. 1st you can avoid putting it on the bumper entirely and apply it on the window. Glass is much easier to clean off than the rest of the car. The 2nd method is to apply the bumper sticker to a magnet. This is a nice temporary solution that you can put on or take off at any time. The 3rd method for easy bumper sticker removal is to add a layer of car wax. Adding car wax to where you want to apply the sticker makes it easier later on when the time comes to remove it.

Can custom stickers be made sticky again after they have been removed?
Yes they can and it’s really easy to do. You would need an adhesive spray of some kind. The glue-like substance will be enough to make the surface tacky enough for it to stick once again. When applying the spray you would have to do so in a sweeping motion so that it evens out on the backside of the sticker. It’s recommended to hold the spray between 6-8 inches from the sticker surface since that’s all that would be required.
